Jockey Truck Driver (Salisbury)

Salary: $15.00/hr. FT

Direct Hire opportunity   Hours: M-Th. 7a-4:15p / F 7a-12p


The Yard Driver moves trailers from door to door for loading and unloading.  Places empty trailers on pad for production, using trailers that are tagged out of service.

Pulls loaded trailers from the production pad, into the designated area as directed from Yard Supervisor, always leaving enough room for forklift operators to safely unload for storage. Supply trailers that are loaded with product that is in need of reworking to the warehouse, pull trailers loaded with reworked product to designated area to be unloaded for storage; staging empty trailers for the reworked product to be loaded onto once rework completed.  Supply trailers that are road ready to forklift operators for pre-loading and staging them in designated areas for pick up.  Supply red tag trailers to maintenance shop for repair or inspection.  Place empty trailers that are not needed in the pre-designated areas as assigned by Supervisor.  Assist Yard Crew with keeping the yard clean; assist the Yard Crew with reworking / stacking bagged product as needed and working with the covering crew.  Responsible for pre-shift inspection, check all fluid levels, clean filters, check tire pressure, and add fluids if necessary and fueling truck with diesel fuel.  Operate the jockey truck in a safe manner

Job Description:

Responsible for ensuring correct trailer in designated door for loading and proper hook up between designated tractor and trailer

Place outbound trailer/truck to assigned loading dock

Hook assigned tractor to trailer according to daily schedule

Communicate with supervisor on all changes due to equipment breakdown and/or availability

Communicate with Receiving Supervisor on unloading sequence of backhauls

Coordinate equipment hook up

Ensuring tasks and documentation are completed neatly, completely, accurately and timely

Preventative, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for trucks, trailers and docks (such as repairs on mud flaps, door roller/hinges, lights, minor wiring, minor interior, bulk head, sheet metal, etc.) Including documenting and filing of all maintenance performed

Recognize equipment failures and defects and promptly communicate larger repair and maintenance needs to maintenance and management

Communicate with maintenance garage on equipment schedule for inspection lane

Monitor and document fluid levels, temperatures and seal integrity

Maintain cleanliness of trucks and trailers

Monitor and report monthly engine hour readings

Maintain annual inspections and files

Perform Fuel maintenance and upkeep daily and as needed

Other duties assigned by site management

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or GED

1 year CDL driving or related experience and/or training; OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Current CDL not necessary, all driving performed on-site.

Past experience as yard jockey or truck driver preferred

Ownership of equipment and maintain cleaning standards

Satisfactory completion of a forklift training program

Ability to utilize equipment for the job (such as computers, cell phone, handheld trackers, copiers, scanners, printers, etc.)

Ability to perform basic math computations and identify/verify numbers.  Able to count and record accurately and assist in physical inventory

Complete any assigned paperwork accurately and timely

Team player and able to follow instructions and work well with others

Able to take direction to meet production demands

Demonstrate sound work ethics, respectful and follows operating procedures

Flexible and reliable.  Ability to work overtime as needed, especially during shipping season

Effective communication/verbal and listening skills

Respectful of co-workers, management and works site;  demonstrate sound work ethics

Must possess ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, safety procedures, and memos in English

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to other employees or management

General problem solving skills

Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license

Ability to work independently

Ability to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced, change-oriented environment

Must be authorized to work in the United States

Must pass pre-employment drug screen

Other Essential Functions:

Required to climb in and out of the jockey truck numerous times daily hooking and unhooking empty or loaded trailers

Required to do some lifting of bagged product that could weigh up to 65 pounds a bag.  Occasionally required to walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, bend twist, & squat

Must be able to push or pull (such as bags of product, or a hand truck) on a frequent basis

Must be able to work effectively in outdoor climates(s) – cold, heat, rain, fog, dust, snow

Must be able to operate company vehicles in a variety of different weather conditions while on rough terrain

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision; depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving trucks

Safety PPE Assigned: 

Hard Hat, Vest, Boot Program, Eye Glasses, Dust Mask, and Hearing Plugs
