Material Handler / Forklift / Production Line Tech
Hours: M-Th. 4pm-2:30am (40 hours)
Operating a fork lift to move, locate, stack, count products and bulk material to support production team assigned to. Accountable for safe and efficient operation of the fork lift and radio frequency. May be also required to perform General Laborer duties along with loading and unloading flatbed trucks. Responsible for recording all product transactions and product movements. Report directly to the shipping and receiving manager and will have dotted line responsibility to the production shift supervisor on the shift assigned. Level I: In Plant This position serves the production lines with all materials and supplies needed to maintain production output and removes material and supplies from the production area as required. Level II: Yard Responsible to move, locate, stack, count SKUs and or bulk material. Transfer materials to production, distribution or load flatbed trucks. Responsible for ensuring that all products are packaged in a quality manner and in accordance with the Bill of Materials. Troubleshooting machine breakdowns and minor maintenance repairs on equipment. Run assigned production bag line and meet production needs. Responsible for the daily pre-checks and basic machine preventative maintenance; when needed obtain maintenance assistance. Make adjustments to equipment to ensure proper weights, measures etc. Perform stretch wrap shrink tests to ensure reduced waste. Responsible for cleaning up areas so walkways are clear of debris. Follow safety policies and wear needed PPE at all times. Pre-shift inspections required for line to ensure safety guards are in place and e-stops are functioning.
Operate packaging machine to fill soil/mulch bags. Experience with Premier Tech, Hamer, Amadas, or Zygot packaging equipment preferred.
Pull sample products for weighing to assure products meet specifications; record weights and calculate average; charts the average weight.
Changeover and washout equipment.
Understand basic equipment operation; monitor equipment operation.
Observes equipment operation to detect machine malfunction. Trouble-shoot and repair equipment if within scope of skills. Work with Maintenance Department at time to
examine product or packaging for conformance to specifications. (Labels, date codes etc.)
Work with Lead Operators to learn and complete production requirements.
May use computer for data entry.
Maintains supplies of materials to production floor or yard.
Removes finished products from the lines to designated areas.
Clears out trash bags and waste.
Keeps warehouse and storage areas neat and clean, including outside yard areas.
Maintains proper paperwork at end of shifts.
Maintains proper inventory using inventory procedures.
Unload inbound shipments; move product to storage locations.
Load, unload, move, stock, and stage products and materials using a forklift, clamp truck, or other power equipment.
Pull and prepare product for shipment ensuring the exact number and types of product is loaded.
Keep appropriate records and reports for inventory accuracy.
Comply with all OSHA and MSDS standards.
Report quality variances.
Complete daily inspection of equipment.
Ensure proper stock rotation.
Other duties assigned by management
High School diploma or GED
1-3 years’ forklift experience & 1-3 years’ experience loading / unloading flatbed trucks
3 years’ experience machine maintenance (air, electric and water)
Mechanical ability, grease bearings, adjust machinery as instructed; detect basic issues i.e. sensors working correctly etc.
Experience in a fast pace warehouse / manufacturing / shipping environment
Previous experience working on high speed packaging lines
Ability to follow instructions and complete required training including satisfactory completion of forklift training programs
Effective verbal, listening and communications skills
Work overtime as needed, especially during shipping season
Attention to detail a must; able to count and record accurately & assist in physical inventory
Must be team oriented and also be able to work independently
Able to take direction and lead other General Laborers to meet production demands
General Problem solving skills
Must be eligible to work in the United States
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
Other Essential Functions:
Regularly required to drive a forklift
Ability to lift 30-50 pounds continuously, must be able to move product up to 24 ft in length
Function in a moderate noise level environment, with earplugs if desired
Withstand the presence of odors from soil and mulch products
Be alert at all times, forklifts are working in a confined area; there are numerous conveyors and moving parts on the bagging line
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision as well as depth perception
Ability to bend, twist, squat, pushing/pulling freight, stand, walk, sit, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, listen and use arms, hands and fingers throughout shift.
Must be able to work effectively in outdoor climate(s) – cold, heat, rain, snow, fog, etc.
